Safè in Friedrichshain: “We serve Neapolitan coffee in Berlin since 2008, we love this city!”

Safé is a very small but pretty coffee shop. The atmosphere inside is quite distinctive: a flag of Naples and a picture of Toto and Peppino just above the coffee machine. It is located in Ostkreuz, one the liveliest neighbourhoods of the city; here, coffee is grinded instantly and it can also be sold at a retail price.

“The coffee shop name comes from the initials of our names, Sandro and Federico. In 2001 I went on Erasmus in Berlin. In 2005 perspectives in Italy were not so good. I used to live in Spain and London but I eventually decided to settle in Berlin. I love the atmosphere of this city.” “Have you ever thought of coming back to Italy?” “Just for holidays. My girlfriend is from Brandenburg. We’re fine here. Our son is perfectly bilingual, there’s no reason why we should move from here”, Federico tells us.

“My associate is Sandro. We’ve been close friends for so long. When he knew that Safé would have been closed soon, he asked me to take it over together. About 70% of our clients are Germans. They recognise and appreciate quality. Anyway it’s not uncommon to receive strange orders like focaccia bread with spicy salami and cappuccino, inconceivable in Italy. In the coffee shop it’s me, Sandro and another collaborator. The coffee shop is open from Monday to Friday from 7am until 7 pm, and during the weekend until 10 pm.“

“I see many Italians coming in Berlin and trying to succeed. Someone succeeds and others not. Italians usually succeed; the real problem that makes Italians leaving from their country are institutions.”
